Part IV: Conditioning Change For Results

Ninety Days Same As Change

“We make our habits and then our habits make us.” – Stanford Lee

Now that you’ve made the changes and you’re all set to begin reaping the benefits of increased business, increased clients and increased commissions, you need to keep in mind that very little change will occur for three months. Why is that? Let’s use an example that’s easy to follow.

You decide you need to go on a diet and lose an extra 20 pounds. Today you begin your diet and begin to take in 500 fewer calories each day. Tomorrow you get on the scale expecting to see a drop in weight because you feel lighter since you ate less. You see that you weigh less, right? No, since your body hasn’t begun to accept the change since the accumulation of changes hasn’t moved the needle enough yet.

This example is similar to what you’ll be going through as you begin to change your behaviors and habits. You’ll be doing something different, but you won’t see the results that will accompany the change. Remember the old patience prayer?

“Lord, please give me patience…and do it now!” – Author Unknown

You need to accept the old while you’re doing the new. But don't expect miracles immediately. Once you decide to change it takes a good sixty to ninety days before you see any results. Which is why you should not think during this process, but just do. By consciously thinking about this process, you focus too much on the "how" to accomplish your results and don't let this unconscious "success machine" come up with the answers for you.

The other problem that may appear to be a setback is the amount of effort you first put out and the lack of results you see. The ninety days refers to the runway time it takes to begin to see changes in the plans you’ve developed.

When a plane begins the take off procedure, it needs this runway time to accumulate enough speed to have the “lift” to take off. This is the time for the plane to get up enough speed to lift off. During this time, the pilot gives the plane full throttle, 100 percent power, and holds nothing back. Interestingly, a plane begins to have “lift” as soon as the pilot gives the plane full throttle. The plane just doesn’t have enough power to take off, even though the plane is actually flying.

This is also similar to getting up to speed to enter the expressway. If you or the pilot gave your vehicle only half the power needed, it wouldn’t be able to accomplish its purpose. The plane would crash and burn, and you wouldn’t have enough speed to enter the highway.

It’s the same with us. Once we develop a plan a commit to a change, we must give the plan full throttle. What’s discouraging is that the plan won’t actually take off for sixty to ninety days. Only then do we begin to see some kind of progress toward our objectives.

You must continue to give 100 percent of your time toward the actions necessary and be willing to not see the results for up to three months. But once the 90 days are up, you’ll begin to see the whole process falling into place and slowly moving upward toward your results.

Remember that the results you are focusing on are always correct since they’re the results that you want. The plan to get there may have to be altered along the way. So don’t rationalize why you’re not accomplishing your objectives, rather look for the changes you need to make to fix the problem and get back on track.

By focusing on the actions (once your plan is made), your subconscious mind comes up with the “how”; while your conscious mind comes up with the “what.” Focusing is blocking out what’s not necessary. If you focus on the “how,” your subconscious mind shuts down and isn’t allowed to work on the process because all the negative information is drawn in.

Let’s say that last year you made $50,000. The year before you had made $25,000. You used this process and doubled your income. Now your focus is on $100,000, again doubling your income. If you focus on the “how,” you begin to think of how hard you had to work to make $50,000, how hard it was to make all the sacrifices and the success machine shuts down. It becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy, and you prove to yourself that you couldn’t hit $100,000 or you weren’t worthy of it.

But if your focus is on the “what,” regardless of what pain you went through last year, the process is actually pretty easy because your subconscious mind comes up with even more new ideas to achieve the result you’re focused on! Believe in your plan and stick with it!
